Cropredy, Oxfordshire

Cottage in CropredyJust 5 miles north of Banbury situated on both the River Cherwell and Oxford Canal. Its name comes from ‘croppe’ meaning hill and ‘ridig’ meaning small stream. It is an extremely picturesque village with many narrowboats regularly using its canal lock and moorings. No longer used for transporting goods by barge, the canal Toll Office still stands by the narrow section of the canal, where an oak beam used to be lowered until the tolls were paid! Cropredy is also famous for the Battle of Cropredy Bridge (1644) during the Englsh Civil War, and some of the soldiers killed that day are buried in the local St Mary’s churchyard.
