1930s millionaire's mansion
A magnificent house built in the golden age of country living by the heir to the Shell Oil fortune, Walter Samuel, an avid art collector.
Vibrantly atmospheric in its flashes of Art Deco design, the house still buzzes with the excitement of its 1930s heyday. You can join the house party and listen, touch, read and explore to discover more.
You can get close to Upton's outstanding collection of English and continental Old Master paintings including works by Hogarth, Stubbs, Guardi, Brueghel and El Greco as a well as French and English porcelain.
Other delights in the house include Exhibition of Shell Oil publicity posters and Lady Bearsted’s red and silver Art Deco bathroom. There's also an exhibition about the fashion for fancy bathrooms in the 1930s.
The garden is superb. The view opens up from the lawn to reveal terraces, herbaceous borders, a kitchen garden, ornamental pools and an interesting 1930s water garden, together with the National Collection of Asters.
